Peshkar.. students of Tabla master Kuntal Roy.
Shri. Kuntal Roy is a talented Tabla artist teaching dedicated students in the greater Seattle area. He passes on to his students the nuances of Indian classical music in the same manner and rigor as he was taught by his guruji, the legendary master Pandit Shankar Ghosh.
He teaches in Seattle for around 6 months every year, and provides an all-round experience to his students, including participation in vocal, instrument, and dance accompaniment, and frequently invites guests performers. He gives several Taal workshops within the year to not only students of tabla, but also to practitioners of other desciplines in Indian classical music.
What is a Tabla?
Tablas are a pair of hand-drums traditionally used in Indian classical music. Mastering these drums involves learning sophisticated hand techniques and having a strong grasp of Taal (rhythm). More recently, tablas are also used in popular music and western-fusion music due to its tonal appeal and the level of control these drums can provide. A unique characteristic of learning Tabla is the embodiment of rhythmic poetry in these drums and expression of the same through verbal recitation.
